System Administrator for Stanley Hall. Primary maintainer of approximately 15 SGI workstations and various others throughout the entire building. I ultimately report to Professor Koshland (retired editor of Science) but really work for all of the professors in the building, Dr. Alber, Dr. Nelson, Dr. Stevens, Dr. Handel, Dr. Marqusee, etc.

My duties at my employment included, but were not limited to:
System software maintenance:
  • Operating systems (Irix) installation/upgrade/patches.
  • Scientific software, both public and commercial.
  • Useful Unix freeware installation (emacs, trn, gcc, etc.)
  • WWW server software, including writing CGI scripts.
  • FTP server setup.
  • YP/NIS/NFS.
  • Network time daemon maintenance.
  • License management software (FlexLM.)
Hardware maintenance, diagnosis:
  • SCSI devices (disks, tapes, optical drives.)
  • Periodic backups.
  • Dials and button boxes.
  • Bad power supplies.
  • Maintenance contracts.
  • Printers.
User management:
  • Adding/Deleting user accounts.
  • Managing unix user groups.
  • Disk quotas/enforcement.
  • Answering user questions.
Network management:
  • Network ailments.
  • Cabling.
  • DNS arrangements.
